The Gardenia, scientifically known as Gardenia jasminoides, is a beloved evergreen shrub prized for its intoxicatingly fragrant white flowers and glossy dark green foliage. Native to Asia, gardenias are popular in warm climates for use as ornamental shrubs, hedges, or container plants near entrances and patios where their sweet scent can be fully appreciated.
Why Florida Customers Choose Us
Gardenia Breakdown
Appearance:
Gardenias have thick, shiny, deep green leaves that provide a lush backdrop for their creamy white, rose-like blooms.
The flowers are waxy and highly aromatic, typically appearing from late spring through summer. Depending on the variety, blooms may be single or double-petaled.
Growth Rate:
Moderate.
Gardenias grow steadily and respond well to pruning, filling in quickly when properly cared for.
Size:
Most varieties grow 3–6 feet tall and wide, though dwarf varieties remain more compact and some larger cultivars can reach up to 8 feet tall if unpruned.
Sunlight Requirements:
Prefers full sun to partial shade.
In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch and extend bloom time. At least 4–6 hours of sun per day is ideal.
Water Needs:
Moderate.
Gardenias prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely or stay soggy. Mulching helps retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Soil Preferences:
Thrives in rich, well-draining, acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.0).
Soil that’s too alkaline can cause yellowing leaves (chlorosis). Amending with peat moss or using fertilizers formulated for acid-loving plants can help maintain proper conditions.
Maintenance:
Moderate to high.
Gardenias benefit from regular feeding, especially during the growing season, and need careful monitoring of soil pH and watering habits. Prune after blooming to shape and remove spent flowers. Regular deadheading promotes new blooms.
Landscape Use:
Ideal for use as a foundation plant, hedge, or container specimen.
Plant near walkways, patios, or entryways to take full advantage of their fragrance. Smaller varieties are perfect for pots, while larger ones can anchor garden beds or borders.
Climate Tolerance:
Hardy in USDA zones 8–11.
Gardenias prefer warm, humid environments and can struggle in dry or windy conditions. In cooler regions, they can be grown in containers and brought indoors during winter months.
With their rich fragrance and elegant blooms, Gardenias are a timeless addition to southern and tropical landscapes. While they require a bit more attention than some shrubs, the reward is a stunning, aromatic plant that adds beauty and charm wherever it’s planted.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to Plant & Care for Gardenia in Florida
Choose Sun + Spacing
Most Florida plants prefer full to partial sun. Check mature width and space accordingly so plants don’t crowd as they fill in.
Dig Wide, Not Deep
Dig a hole 2–3x wider than the container and slightly shallow. This encourages roots to spread outward into native soil.
Plant at Proper Height
Remove from the pot, loosen circling roots, and plant with the root ball level to slightly above grade.
Water to Establish
Water deeply right after planting. For the first 10–14 days, consistent moisture is critical—don’t let the root ball dry out.
Mulch + Light Maintenance
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch (keep off the stem). Once settled, light trimming encourages fuller growth.

What Florida Customers Say
I was searching for a better plant source and after checking the internet, the consensus by most locals was to check out Dino's Palms. I have ordered multiple times and every plant I have gotten has been above expectations with health and fullness. The customer service is excellent! I am kind of blown away at how great this company is and will continue to use this as my main plant connection.
I bought 12 plants. All in excellent condition. Good size. Delivery was on time. Thank you. I recommend it.
Great price for plants with delivery in PBC. They also did the install and did a great job! I ordered Saturday and had everything in by end of Tuesday. They were quick, upfront with pricing, reasonable and the plants are healthy and gorgeous. Highly recommend!
