Pentas (Pentas lanceolata), often called the Egyptian Star Flower, is South Florida’s workhorse butterfly plant. Its star-shaped bloom clusters in red, pink, lavender, or white appear nearly year-round in our climate, and few plants draw more butterflies and hummingbirds to a garden bed. Compact, sun-loving, and quick to establish, pentas are the easy way to keep continuous color in front beds, borders, and pollinator gardens.

Pentas Breakdown

🌺

Appearance:

Mounding plant with deep green, lance-shaped leaves topped by dense clusters of five-pointed star flowers.

Blooms continuously in warm weather.

📈

Growth Rate:

Fast.

Fills a bed quickly and reblooms without deadheading.

📏

Size:

Typically 1–3 feet tall and wide depending on variety; dwarf types stay under 18 inches.

☀️

Sunlight Requirements:

Full sun for the heaviest bloom; tolerates light afternoon shade.

💧

Water Needs:

Moderate.

Water regularly until established, then during dry spells. Avoid soggy soil.

🌱

Soil Preferences:

Any well-draining soil; adapts readily to South Florida's sandy beds.

✂️

Maintenance:

Low.

An occasional light trim keeps plants compact and full of buds.

🏡

Landscape Use:

Butterfly and pollinator gardens, front borders, mass color plantings, mailbox beds, and containers.

🌡️

Climate Tolerance:

Perennial in USDA zones 10–11 — in South Florida it blooms essentially year-round.

Damaged by frost.

If you want reliable color that feeds butterflies twelve months a year, pentas deliver more bloom per dollar than almost anything else in a South Florida bed. Plant them in groups of three or more for the strongest effect.

How to Plant & Care for Pentas in Florida

1

Pick a Bright Spot

Most flowering plants prefer full sun for best blooms. Morning sun with afternoon shade works well for many varieties.

2

Prep Loose Soil

Dig a wide hole and loosen surrounding soil so roots can spread easily.

3

Plant + Settle

Plant level to slightly above grade. Backfill gently and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets.

4

Frequent Early Watering

Water consistently for the first 1–2 weeks. Flowers dry out faster than shrubs, especially in heat.

5

Deadhead + Feed

Remove spent blooms to encourage new flowers. Light fertilizing after establishment boosts color and growth.

Bought three plants from this company, Dino and his wife are very helpful and pretty good delivery speed if you live in West Palm Beach (free delivery). The plants are healthy, vibrant, and very well established and much better than the product you find online or via Home Depot. You get more plant for the money and the deals are pretty good. Once you buy one plant, you'll be impressed and purchase more.
