How to Spread & Use Premium Topsoil in Florida
Measure + Order
Multiply length × width (feet) × depth (inches) and divide by 324 to get cubic yards. One yard covers about 108 sq ft at 3 inches (sod base) or 54 sq ft at 6 inches (new beds). Round up — topsoil settles after watering.
Clear + Loosen the Ground
Remove weeds, old grass and debris. Loosen compacted or sandy ground with a rake or tiller so the new soil bonds with what’s underneath instead of sitting on top as a separate layer.
Spread + Blend
For planting beds and trees, spread 3–6 inches and mix it into the existing soil so roots grow outward instead of circling. For low spots in a living lawn, add thin layers (about ½ inch at a time) so the grass can grow through.
Grade for Drainage
Rake it level and slope it gently away from the house so rain doesn’t pool against the foundation. For new sod, finish about an inch below walkways and driveways so the sod sits flush.
Water + Settle
Water lightly to settle the soil, then fill any spots that sink. Plant or lay sod soon after so bare soil doesn’t wash out in a Florida downpour.
