The Hurricane Cut Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), also known as the Cabbage Palm or Cabbage Palmetto, is Florida’s state tree and the toughest palm you can put in the ground. This is the classic field-dug Sabal: a mature, full-height trunk harvested from the field with its fronds trimmed back to the center spear so it can throw everything into rooting in. It’s the same palm you see lining Florida highways and new developments by the thousand, and the most economical way to get instant height in the landscape.
Why Florida Customers Choose Us
Sabal Palm (Hurricane Cut) Breakdown
About the Cut:
"Hurricane cut" means the fronds are removed at harvest and only the tightly closed spear leaf (the "candle") is left standing.
This is standard practice for field-dug Sabals — the palm loses most of its roots when dug, and a full crown would pull more water than the new roots can supply. Expect a bare, booted trunk with a spear for the first 6–12 months; the spear opens and a fresh crown of fronds fills in over the first year. For a Sabal that already has a full head of fronds, see our Regenerated Sabal Palm.
Appearance:
A straight, slender gray-brown trunk 10–20 feet tall, often covered in the crisscrossed remnants of old leaf bases ("boots") that give it its signature texture.
Once regrown, the crown is a rounded head of costapalmate, fan-shaped green fronds.
Growth Rate:
Slow.
Trunk height gains are modest, which is exactly why buying field-grown height makes sense.
Size:
20–60 feet at maturity with a 10–15 foot crown spread.
Sold here as field-grown trunks in the 10–20 ft range.
Sunlight Requirements:
Full sun; tolerates part shade.
Water Needs:
Low once established.
Water regularly for the first several months after planting while the new roots take hold, then it handles Florida's dry season on its own.
Soil Preferences:
Grows in nearly anything — sand, limestone, clay, wet or dry, acidic or alkaline.
Salt-tolerant.
Maintenance:
Very low.
Do not trim the spear or any new green fronds while the palm is recovering; remove only fully brown fronds. A palm fertilizer 2–3 times a year speeds the regrowth of the crown.
Landscape Use:
Streetscapes, property lines, groves and clusters, coastal and waterfront plantings, commercial frontage, and anywhere you need native height on a budget.
Plant in odd-numbered groups at staggered heights for a natural look.
Climate Tolerance:
USDA zones 8–11.
Handles frost, drought, flooding, salt spray and hurricane-force winds better than almost any other palm — it has literally earned its name.
Rugged, native and ready for Florida weather, the Hurricane Cut Sabal gives you a mature trunk today and a full canopy within the year — at a fraction of the cost of a regenerated palm. Choose delivery only, or let our crew install it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to Plant & Care for Sabal Palm (Hurricane Cut) in Florida
Choose Sun + Clearance
Palms prefer full to partial sun. Allow room for frond spread and future trunk growth.
Plant Slightly High
Dig a wide hole and plant with the root ball level to slightly above grade. Palms do not like being buried.
Backfill + Water In
Backfill with native soil and water thoroughly to settle. Avoid compacting too aggressively.
Consistent Watering (Critical)
Water deeply and consistently during the first few weeks. Most palm issues come from under-watering early on.
Fertilizer + Pruning
Remove only fully brown fronds. Apply a slow-release palm fertilizer after the palm has settled in.

What Florida Customers Say
Exceptional service!!! Awesome customer service. Dany was very helpful and answered my questions promptly. My palm tree was delivered quickly. They will be my 1st choice when looking for unique and nice looking plants. The Best in the Business..100% recommended 😃😃😃
After scouring the internet for reviews for Landscapers I came across Dino's Palms and sure glad I did! The owner's husband and wife came and were very helpful picking out everything we wanted! We made a deal on doing my entire property and they personally came with a crew to install in one day! The plants were healthy and beautiful and the price for everything was much cheaper than anyone else!
Bought three plants from this company, Dino and his wife are very helpful and pretty good delivery speed if you live in West Palm Beach (free delivery). The plants are healthy, vibrant, and very well established and much better than the product you find online or via Home Depot. You get more plant for the money and the deals are pretty good. Once you buy one plant, you'll be impressed and purchase more.
