Sweet Viburnum Breakdown
Appearance:
Features large, glossy, leathery dark green leaves on a dense, upright frame.
Grows thick from top to bottom, forming a solid living wall. In spring it produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by red berries that ripen to black and attract birds and wildlife.
Growth Rate:
Fast.
Commonly grows 1–2 feet per year, making it one of the quickest ways to establish a privacy hedge.
Size:
Left unpruned it can reach 20–30 feet tall and up to 25 feet wide, but it's most often maintained as a hedge at 4–8 feet.
Easily kept at the height you want with regular trimming.
Sunlight Requirements:
Full sun to partial shade.
Full sun is preferred and keeps growth dense; too much shade can cause it to thin out and become open.
Water Needs:
Moderate.
Water regularly after planting to establish a deep root system. Once established it has moderate drought tolerance, but stays healthiest and fullest with consistent moisture, especially in extreme heat.
Soil Preferences:
Thrives in well-draining soil and adapts to a wide range of Florida soils.
Best performance comes with good drainage.
Maintenance:
Low to moderate.
Responds very well to pruning and shearing, which encourages dense, full growth. Trim to shape and maintain your desired hedge height. Largely pest-free when properly cared for.
Landscape Use:
Ideal for privacy hedges, screens, property borders, and windbreaks.
Also works as a large foundation planting or background shrub in tropical landscapes.
Climate Tolerance:
Hardy in USDA zones 9–11.
Thrives in warm, humid climates and is a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ approved, non-invasive choice.
The Sweet Viburnum is a hardy, fast-growing evergreen that delivers privacy and lush greenery faster than almost any other hedge. Its dense foliage, fragrant spring blooms, and easy maintenance make it a dependable, attractive choice for screening and tropical landscapes year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to Plant & Care for Sweet Viburnum in Florida
Choose Sun + Spacing
Most Florida plants prefer full to partial sun. Check mature width and space accordingly so plants don’t crowd as they fill in.
Dig Wide, Not Deep
Dig a hole 2–3x wider than the container and slightly shallow. This encourages roots to spread outward into native soil.
Plant at Proper Height
Remove from the pot, loosen circling roots, and plant with the root ball level to slightly above grade.
Water to Establish
Water deeply right after planting. For the first 10–14 days, consistent moisture is critical—don’t let the root ball dry out.
Mulch + Light Maintenance
Apply 2–3 inches of mulch (keep off the stem). Once settled, light trimming encourages fuller growth.

What Florida Customers Say
No need to look any further than Dino's Palms :) Incredible website - very easy to use. After a few minutes with fantastic pricing, I purchased what was needed and sent the order. Received an immediate reply and a subsequent date for installation. The tree was as described - the installer was professional and thorough even cleaning where some dirt had fallen in the street. Will deal again Highly recommend / easy 5 Stars - thank you!!!
Dino's Palms just completed a full landscape install at our property in Tequesta. They planted 10 Christmas palms, 9 Coconuts, Silver buttonwood trees, hundreds of clusia, and more small plants. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality and service.
Bought three plants from this company, Dino and his wife are very helpful and pretty good delivery speed if you live in West Palm Beach (free delivery). The plants are healthy, vibrant, and very well established and much better than the product you find online or via Home Depot. You get more plant for the money and the deals are pretty good. Once you buy one plant, you'll be impressed and purchase more.
